Taking Photos of Food
Taking pictures is easy… Taking good looking photos is hard.
But the impact of a good looking photo on your desire to then cook that recipe can’t be overstated. If the photo is good, you want to eat it; if its just blah, well then you don’t. Am I wrong?
One of my favorite sites for great looking photos is Smitten Kitchen. So I decided to try it myself. I uploaded our Cilantro Rice recipe (which is pretty good) and the pictures I took while making it.
What I found out:
- Just having a 7.1 megapixel camera won’t make the photos look good, especially food
- Wrapping the camera around a microwave door is a good idea for overhead still shots of cooking
- Our cameras now save files that are 8-10 megabytes, which is great for printing, but not for web… you may have to resize this to less than 4 meg to upload

Supposedly a Macro Lens works well on getting close to food and getting a lot of detail. However, I don’t have that kind of cash flow.
What do you do to take photos?
Also, We Eatt is officially out of beta-protection; no code is longer needed to log in. Go forth and recipate! (too much?)
